If cutting edge music is what you're into, Galoka, near the Empress Hotel , is a bar not to be missed. From improvisational jazz to alternative hip-hop, Galoka features beats a little fresher than those of mainstream music. Early in the week, Galoka hosts Pass the Peas, a night of open-mic poetry and music. On Fridays and Saturdays, Galoka turns up the volume and puts on dance parties geared towards the trendy twenty-something crowd.

For straight-up jazz, head to Elario's Sky Lounge, next to the Hotel La Jolla at the Shores . Bright colors, dark carved wood and potted plants give the Lounge a lively and sophisticated feel. Elario's features different bands most nights of the week, including the Judy Chamberlain Jazz Trio, which performs on Fridays and Saturdays to a packed house. Arrive just before sunset to take in one of the best views of San Diego 's shores while listening to the notes of the band peal out across the Lounge.

The On Broadway Event Center, located near the Ramada Inn & Suites Gaslamp , is the jewel of the city's bar scene. Floored in Italian marble and topped off with a thirty foot high gold ceiling, the venue is adorned with a 35-foot-long red bar, 72-inch television monitors and a bevy of colored lights. Order one of On Broadway's top-notch martinis and grab a seat on the plush white couches of the nightclub's Ultra Lounge, where DJs spin urban beats against a backdrop of modern artworks.

San Diego offers a wide range of cultural entertainment to enjoy at night. Located near the Radisson Harbor View , the San Diego Opera has long been one of the staples of the city's nightlife arts scene. Founded in 1950, the Opera has been hosting five productions for each January-May season for over fifty years. The Opera features famous works like “The Magic Flute” and “Rigoletto” as well as original productions such as “Cosi fan tutte,” a drama set in early twentieth century San Diego. The La Jolla Music Society, close to the Hyatt Regency La Jolla , has been setting the standard in California classical music performance for the past sixty years. The Music Society boasts five major concert series each year including a much celebrated piano series. If you're visiting during the summer months, be sure to check out La Jolla Music Society's SummerFest, a three week long chamber music festival that features local musicians and composers as well as famous guests.

San Diego offers so many options for night time activities that it's almost impossible to stay in after the sun sets. Whether you want to dance ‘till dawn or kick back with a martini, in San Diego , you'll always find a reason to make the night last just a little bit longer.
